That’s it, folks, french style.

What ? What am I talking about ? Well, I think it’s simple. I think we should create one more Twitter tag. What are Twitter tags ? Oh ! You know, this “@” tag, the tag used to reply to somebody, was created by Twitter users. The hashtag, the keyworkd tag “#” also was created by Twitter users. And why not create some more tags ? I mean, we have flexible brains. Of course, when I write about this, I must have my own idea. I do have one.
The VUM tag, Very Urgent Message.
In these times of incredible and beautiful worldwide citizenship (#iranelection), we need this kind of tag, don’t you think ? For the gaming geeks, this tag would be just like the /shout key in World of Warcraft. Of course, this tag would be very important, so people shouldn’ use it for any reasons.
Change has come to computers. Change has come, and it’s name is Netbook. Netbooks. Netbooks. Netbooks. Netbooks are small-sized, cheap yet useful computers.
A netbook is a small portable laptop computer designed for wireless communication and access to the Internet.
Primarily designed for web browsing and e-mailing, netbooks rely heavily on the Internet for remote access to web-based applications and are targeted increasingly at cloud computing users who require a less powerful client computer.
So netbooks are “smaller” computers.
Now, there is new fight; a new dawn for operating systems designers; the netbook OS. Who will create the OS that fits the most for these computers ? At the beginning, it was Windows XP. Yeah. XP can’t continue; netbooks OS are now focused on the future, not in the good things of the past.
So today, you’ll read about four different netbook OS. Android (but oh, this isn’t an “official” netbook OS, it’s for smartphones; I know). Moblin, the Linux-ed one. gOS, Good OS, cloud operating system also based on Linux. Jolicloud, the frenchie one launched by Tariq Krim, founder of Netvibes.
Let’s begin.
Android
This, is Android. I will be fair, everyone is gonna have his own presentation.
Android was built from the ground-up to enable developers to create compelling mobile applications that take full advantage of all a handset has to offer. It was built to be truly open. For example, an application can call upon any of the phone’s core functionality such as making calls, sending text messages, or using the camera, allowing developers to create richer and more cohesive experiences for users. Android is built on the open Linux Kernel. Furthermore, it utilizes a custom virtual machine that was designed to optimize memory and hardware resources in a mobile environment. Android is open source; it can be liberally extended to incorporate new cutting edge technologies as they emerge. The platform will continue to evolve as the developer community works together to build innovative mobile applications.
Alright. Android is all about syncing, the cloud, web data, syncing, web data, open source, syncing web data. It’s a simple yet powerful smartphone OS and it’s surely the first open source OS for smartphones. At least, the most famous one. Now, what about netbooks, huh ? Well, I think Android is a very flexible OS that will surely adapt to the netbook OS market, at least, I hope so. If the Open Handset Alliance accepts, of course.
Moblin
The Moblin Architecture is designed to support multiple platforms and usage models ranging fromNetbooks to Mobile Internet Devices (MID), to various embedded usage models, such as the In Vehicle Infotainment systems. The central piece of the architecture is the common layer we call “Moblin Core”, a hardware and usage model independent layer that provides one uniform way to develop such devices. Underneath the Moblin Core sits the Linux kernel and device drivers specific to the hardware platform, and above the Moblin Core are the specific user interface and user interaction model for the target device.
Moblin is the Linux fondation OS for netbooks. As you can see in the video, it has a nice design, and it’s simple, free and open source. It’s my favorite one though I don’t like that much Linux OS (I prefer Leopard). Moblin seems very fast yet powerful and connected to the Internet. Moreover, I like the name Moblin.
gOS
Since our debut in 2007, gOS has been praised for being the most beautiful and easiest to use Linux operating system on the market. Now with our third and best version of gOS, we have carried on our effort to create a Linux for the rest of us. Turn on your computer to a desktop full of your favorite widgets, fresh with live, personalized content just for you. We want to personally thank the Google Gadgets for Linux team for their efforts.
I think that gOS is a good netbook. But I think this netbook OS battle requires more creativity, aesthetically too. gOS has the good sides of OS X; the Dock, the upper-status bar and the Dashboard styled Desktop with all these Google Gadgets. It’s fine, but it surely isn’t the most innovative, fresh one. But they’re probably right when they say that Good OS is the easiest Linux OS to use.
Jolicloud
Jolicloud is an Internet operating system. It combines the two driving forces of the modern computing industry: the open source and the open web.
Jolicloud transforms your netbook into a sophisticated web device that taps into the cloud to expand your computing possibilities. The web already hosts a significant part of our lives: mails, photos, videos, and friends are already somewhere online. Jolicloud was built to make the computer and web part of the same experience.
The online world is taking processing power away from our computers, so we won’t need expensive machines in the future. The web improves itself, so we don’t need to replace machines all the time to be able to run newer versions of operating systems or office suites.
Well, I’m sorry. I searched for an official video but I didn’t find one. Mr. Krim ? Remember, remember I talked about this OS a very long time ago… Jolicloud is a remarkable OS, it’s a social one; it’s perfectly connected to all your web profiles but this connection is it’s only great innovation; Moblin has it too. And Moblin’s design is more beautiful and more social on the inside. Social on the inside ? The Linux community is surely bigger than Jolicloud’s one even though Jolicloud was built on Ubuntu.
Verdict
If you want a ranking, it’s simple. Android (because it’s not adapted yet), gOS, Jolicloud and Moblin. But more sincerely, you decide. You have the tools to decide what is the best OS for you. I can’t choose for you.
I said that I prefered Moblin because I like the way it’s connected to your web data, it’s clean and simple and I like the idea of the community behind it. I like Jolicloud because it’s French and because it has a stronger link to your web updates than the others. I like gOS because it’s the easiest way to get in touch with Linux and I like Android because I like it.
What is this ?
Saturday, I really discovered—completly—Twitter’s usefullness. I read the Time’s cover story, How Twitter Will Change the Way We Live. If you read it, you’ll twitterly understand what I’m going to say.
So, WebTrends. It is a very simple combination of words, Web & Trends. But it’s also a combination of links and review. I will watch very closely 3 web services per day and then, everyday, I’ll save the keyword/bookmark that is the most important and every week, I’ll do a complete post with the links, why are they here and other comments. This is the
Twitter (hash)tags of the day : 2
Digg 24:00 most popular tech : 1
Delicious most bookmarked of the day : 2
= 5 per day
5 x 7 = 35 links per week.
It will be a weekly log of the web trends. That’s it. It is hard work but I’ll do it.
I’ll begin next monday.

Not so long ago, I was invited to Spotify. I downloaded it and beginned to search some music (Bob Dylan, of course). Then I became a premium member of Spotify. So this is the little story of how I discovered it.
The first thing you’ll notice when you’ll use Spotify is that it looks like iTunes but—darker. Only ? Oh no. Basically, you can search any artist, choose a song and listen to it, instantly and freely. I was completly bluffed; how can it be so fast ? This is the answer, geeky, sure, but it exists:
The contents of each client’s cache is summarized in an index which is sent to the Spotify stream hub upon connecting to the service. This index is then used to inform other clients about additional peers they can connect to for fetching streamed data for individual tracks being played. This is accommodated by each client, upon startup, acting as a server listening for incoming connections from other Spotify users, as well as intuitively connecting to other users to exchange cached data as appropriate. There are currently no official details from the developers about how many connections and how much of a user’s upstream bandwidth the Spotify client will use when streaming to other users; the Spotify client offers no way for the user to configure this, but this may change in the future.
When you click on an artist’s name link, you’ll see basic informations such as: a short biography, the artist’s hits, his albums and Similar artists (it works).
So, do you want more than free, legal, ultra-fast available music on Mac & PC’s ? Oh, and when I say music, it’s probably 80% of all songs and 98% of major global hits.
This is the link to create an account and download Spotify. Normally, it doesn’t work in the U.S.A.
Did Apple made a little mistake or did I ? Is it too geeky for you ?
(On Apple notebooks, USB plugs are on the left; not on the right.)
It comes from yesterday’s WWDC :)
I wanted to test this version for a long, long, long time. But everytime I launched it, it crashed. I discovered that the problem comes from the add-ons you put in Safari 3. So if you want your Safari 4 to work, uninstall the plugins/add-ons.
I don’t know how to explain it very well, but I can ensure you that I load my WordPress Dashboard (the system behind the blog) twice as fast. Yeah, yeah, that’s it.
Still, I think you should test it and tell me what you think.
S stands for Speed. It is approximately 2-3 times faster on every single aspect; it has a compass, a 3 megapixel camera and video recording. It has the same design—no matte design; glossy. 16GB $199, 32GB $299.
Apple today announced that Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard will launch in September and will be priced at only $29 for current OS X 10.5 Leopard users.
There is no more Aluminium MacBooks. They’re now called; MacBooks Pro. They’ve been upgraded, too.
I don’t like the fact of re-using information that is useless. This is Apple’s info:
The first thing you’ll notice about iPhone 3G S is how quickly you can launch applications. Web pages render in a fraction of the time, and you can view email attachments faster. Improved performance and updated 3D graphics deliver an incredible gaming experience, too. In fact, everything you do on iPhone 3G S is up to 2x faster and more responsive than iPhone 3G.
Voice Control recognizes the names in your Contacts and knows the music on your iPod. So if you want to place a call or play a song, all you have to do is ask.
Apple could make the strategic move of the year.
Some blogs are saying that the iPhone 3 (let’s call it iPhone Video) will be annonced on June 8th. I agree. And the Agence France-Presse (AFP) is saying that the iPhone Video will be released in France during July. And some more french blogs are saying that it will be released during the end of June. Alright. Now, rumors say the Palm Pre will be released in Europe during the end of this 2009 or during early 2010.
Why is that ? Because the Pre has been commercialized with CDMA protocol. What is it ? It’s U.S Europe’s GSM. It’s U.S telecommunications system for mobile phones. And it does not work in Europe. So, as the Pre has been released on June 6th, I think they’ll need some time to adapt to the European market.
The counter-analysis. Palm has already prepared their Pres for this so they’re ready.
However, if they haven’t, Apple would overwhelm Palm by releasing the iPhone Video before the Pre in Europe. And it would be a faire fight in the U.S if Apple releases the iPhone Video on monday (June 8th).
Anyway, we’ll see that tomorrow. Be ready, Live coverage will be made possible by GDGT.
Ok, so this is a geeky title. Serif fonts are fonts… Wait. Wikipedia is your friend.
In typography, serifs are semi-structural details on the ends of some of the strokes that make up letters and symbols. A typeface that has serifs is called a serif typeface (or seriffed typeface). A typeface without serifs is called sans-serif, from the French sans, meaning “without”. Some typography sources refer to sans-serif typefaces as “grotesque” (in German “grotesk”) or “Gothic,” and serif types as “Roman.”
And of course, I Shot The Sheriff (and not Serif) is a song made by Bob Marley.
No. At least, I really don’t think so. Read this below and I’ll continue.
In one of the more intriguing surveys of recent weeks, website One News Page has found that over half of the people it surveyed will be replacing Google with Bing as their main search engine.
The news portal surveyed 1,000 people and found that 55 per cent of those who answered preferred to use Bing to search for things on the internet.
Even more unbelievable, 68 per cent of those surveyed actually liked the name Bing – they must really like Chandler from Friends – and 90 per cent said they would use the expression “to Bing it”.
Just Bing it!
“Microsoft has a winner in Bing and in a couple of years it may be a force to be reckoned with,” said Dr Marc Pinter-Krainer, founder of One News Page.
“Microsoft finds ways of entering late into mature markets and flexing its huge marketing muscles to grab substantial share.
“My verdict is that Bing will give Google a good run for its money, and the resulting competition in the search engine market can only be a good thing.”
In other news, three out of three out of four TechRadar journalists will never say the expression “to Bing it” without sniggering. And that is a fact.

I admit that this is completly possible. But I also have a question. Did these people change their homepages ? I mean, if their homepages were Google, did they change them into Bing ? No, I guess not. They’ll use Bing for a week, a month max, but Google is a lot faster and also more fluid. So, as the human body works, they’ll come back to sweet and truthful Google. Because reliability is vital for this kind of websites and if Bing fails them once, they’ll leave it very fast. And as they’re used to Google, they’ll come back (again).
In the meantime, not a lot of people are aware of Bing’s existence. At least, French non hard-tech educated youth. And nothing will/can replace Google in their minds. For them, Google is Internet. When they launch their browsers, (homepage Google) they won’t go in the URL bar to type the adress, no, no, they’ll type Facebook into Google’s and wait for the result (and the link).
How to change this ? I guess Microsoft’ll need to prove us that Bing is really better and unfortunaly, it isn’t. Sorry. Also, remember that my generation is the next one. So, change must be felt now or wait for another generation to come. But don’t waste our web.
