Entrepreneurs in the Middle East: YallaStartup weekend

On november 12th, 2010, in Beirut, Lebanon will take place a conference weekend that will be all about entrepreneurship in the Middle East, how can start-ups be successful and all that kind of interesting topics.

I wanted to have a story for the Middle East, showing the world that there is interest in entrepreneurship and technology there. People perceive the Middle East as a land of wars, we just want to show the other side, the passion of the youth.—Elie El-Khoury, founder of Woopra on YallaStartup weekend.

Stuxnet: the groundbreaking computer worm

Usually, I don’t like to talk about technology security, mainly because I don’t understand much. But, one more time, I stumbled upon a fascinating piece by the Economist technology blog; Babbage.

It is all about this new worm that attacks industrial-control systems, nuclear reactors, Iran, Siemens and security.

Things organized neatly. I enjoy discovering new blogs and I especially appreciate this one.

Net Index: real users broadband statistics

Behind this barbarian title lies a very simple explanation.

The Net Index is powered by SpeedTest. SpeedTest is a tool that tests and measures your Internet connection speed: ping, download, upload. The Net Index is the world index for Internet connection speed based on millions of recent test results from SpeedTest and therefore from all around the world.

You can be sure that the data is precise. Plus, the site’s design is quite neat. Go check it out.

Wolfram|Alpha is now a doctor

Wolfram|Alpha, the computational knowledge engine, has unveiled a new feature. You can now ask Wolfram|Alpha about medical drugs treatment.

Yet, you don’t have to be scared about auto-medication, it does not give you the name of a brand, but statistics, name of the molecules and other scientific stuff.

A little bit of Star Wars art

You know the drill. Star warks => Geek => Internet. First is a retro poster of Star Wars.

Then, victorian portraits of Star Wars characters. In this one, C-3PO.

The end of an important adventure

It smells like it’s the end of a great yet short adventure, which will continue, in another language.

In January 2009, I changed Whytech’s language (at this time, TechAwe.com was Whytech.fr) for diverse reasons such as personal blooming. Now, I’m changing back to french. Why? Because you’re not reading it. What? In french, I had a superior visibility and comments and a lot more of visitors. It’s normal, don’t you think? I think it is.

I’m not sad, I’m not disappointed, I’m not going to cry; I made this experiment (changing languages) and I’m now more mature and experimented in terms of blogging. I’m going to apply these changes to french and we’ll see. If nobody comes back, I’ll stop, because blogging when you’re alone ain’t blogging.

Yet, some trails of english blogging will remain. Every month, I’ll try to translate my best articles in english.

Thank you (if you’re reading) for this—short—adventure.

Fluid, create simple and beautiful Site Specific Browser

Fluid

Are you a Gmail, Facebook, Campfire or Pandora fanatic? Do you have 20 or more browser tabs open at all times? Are you tired of some random site or Flash ad crashing your browser and causing you to lose your (say) Google Docs data in another tab?

OS X Leopard Dock with an icon for Facebook.app right along normal apps like Dashboard, Mail, and TextMate.

If so, Site Specific Browsers (SSBs) provide a great solution for your WebApp woes. Using Fluid, you can create SSBs to run each of your favorite WebApps as a separate Cocoa desktop application. Fluid gives any WebApp a home on your Mac OS X desktop complete with Dock icon, standard menu bar, logical separation from your other web browsing activity, and many, manyother goodies.

It’s awesome, try it.

iPhone jailbreak stuck with “waiting for reboot” with Redsn0w ? Easy solution

As I said in a previous post, I prefer to use Dev-Team’s software to hack my iPhone. Yesterday, while I was trying to jailbreak an iPhone, it stucked during the process with Redsn0w saying: waiting for reboot. Credits to a  guy on a MacRumors forum, the solution is simple.

Unplug your iPhone and then plug it back very quickly to the USB port. The iPhone screen will go white and the process will continue normally.

“At home” applications

athomeapps

What are “at home” apps ? The answer is simple. I got a 16GB USB stick. Since every geek does the same thing, I carry it wherever I go. I’ve put, in this USB key some of the most important, non-generic, applications I could need if the computer I’ll use doesn’t have the applications. You can call them essential applications. A simple example: school computers.
