HP files for PalmPad trademark, the WebOS tablet?

After HP bought Palm, a rush of hope ran through WebOS lovers’ veins. Yesterday, we learned that HP filed for the PalmPad trademark. Palm… Pad… Tablet. Right. Now this, is odd, no? Why would Palm call it the PalmPad and not the WebPad? Or something related to WebOS specifically and not to Palm.

Well anyway, it seems that this Palm rep is keeping his promise.

Google acquires Metaweb, gets smarter

So, what is Metaweb? The answer lies in this video.

Why is Google buying it? They want a deeper understanding of the Web. How cool could this be if it’s extended to Google Search? Really cool. Basically, Google wants to be able to answer your questions, before you see the search results. Yet, it already can—try: when is barack obama’s birthday—but it wants to do it in a smarter way.

In the future, when you’ll try to search: actors over 40 who have won at least one oscar, you will see the answer before the results. That’s about it.

Google invested 100m in Zynga, will be launching Google Games

TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington must be happy. This scoop is great. What is Zynga? Farmville. Their revenue? Estimated 350m for the first half of 2010.

Will Google Games fail like Google Social stuff have failed? Probably.

Windows 8 internal slides leaks, Microsoft chasing Apple

Well, you must know by now: I’m an Apple fan. Yet, theses slides that leaked from Microsoft are a bit disappointing, right? Well, they’re mainly trying to chase Apple. And we know that Apple “killers” often lose.

WWDC 2010, iPhone 4 and something else that changes everything

NewImage.jpg

Finally, it happened, the iPhone 4 is now official and everybody’s happy—I hope. Now, the iPhone 4 is indeed a beast that beats other smartphones like Master Chief beats Covenants, yet, if you didn’t find a satisfying article about it, summing up the most important innovations, I guess MobileCrunch made a pretty good review.

One more thing… As Martin Bryant noticed, the most important thing wasn’t the iPhone 4 announcement. It was the name change from iPhone OS to iOS. This OS is now free from its iPhone name, so it can fit other devices—how awesome would an Apple watch be?

The end of an important adventure

It smells like it’s the end of a great yet short adventure, which will continue, in another language.

In January 2009, I changed Whytech’s language (at this time, TechAwe.com was Whytech.fr) for diverse reasons such as personal blooming. Now, I’m changing back to french. Why? Because you’re not reading it. What? In french, I had a superior visibility and comments and a lot more of visitors. It’s normal, don’t you think? I think it is.

I’m not sad, I’m not disappointed, I’m not going to cry; I made this experiment (changing languages) and I’m now more mature and experimented in terms of blogging. I’m going to apply these changes to french and we’ll see. If nobody comes back, I’ll stop, because blogging when you’re alone ain’t blogging.

Yet, some trails of english blogging will remain. Every month, I’ll try to translate my best articles in english.

Thank you (if you’re reading) for this—short—adventure.

3rd gen iPod touch had a camera, until…

Just this morning, we linked to the results of iFixit’s iPod nano teardown. Hours later, we have the opportunity to dive into their 32GB iPod touch teardown. There are definitely a few interesting tidbits about what Apple did and did not do with the iPod touch this time around… and possibly some hints of what could happen in the future. Here are the highlights:

  • The ARM processor in the iPod touch is a newer revision than the iPhone 3GS’s CPU. We still don’t know its exact clock speed but it’s a definite upgrade from the 2nd Generation iPod touch.
  • It has a 1080 mAh battery; what does that mean? Well, it’ll get pretty good battery life. Apple’s website lists it at 30 hours of music playback.
  • The NAND flash memory is manufactured by Samsung and has been split into two chips to achieve the 32GB capacity.
  • The wireless chip is from Broadcom. According to their documentation this chip supports 802.11 n as well as 802.11 a/b/g. This is a new move from Apple. Until now, all of the mobile devices have only had g-capable wireless chips. It’s possible that this would be enabled in the future, but I wouldn’t put money on that.
  • Mark this one as rumor fodder: iFixit claims that there is room for a camera at the top of the device. The empty space measures 6mm x 6mm x 3mm. That could easily fit the same style camera as the 5th gen iPod Nano, but they don’t believe an iPhone-quality camera would fit because of the limited space.

If that’s not enough iPod touch news for you, read on.

The digitizer, glass and the midplane assembly are different than previous models, so hanging onto your 2nd gen will do you no good if you break the glass on your 3rd gen iPod touch.Apple took advantage of all the free space on the logic board. The 3rd generation 32GB iPod touch looks like a complicated mess compared to the 2nd generation 8GB.

The Broadcom chip also has an integrated FM receiver and transmitter. So, it’s possible that we could still see radio come to the 3rd gen iPod touch and not just the 5th gen iPod nano.

Apple seems to be following a disappointing trend, at least from the case-cracker’s perspective… every current generation iPod is extremely hard to get open. Having worked on these myself, I have to agree with iFixit. Gone are the days when customers could easily fix an iPod themselves. However, you can get into an iPhone 3GS with the removal of two screws and a suction cup. Odd?

I personally find it somewhat disheartening that Apple would include so many goodies in an already amazing device, but fail to fully enable their potential. I’ll admit that I don’t know if there would be repercussions after enabling these extras, but they definitely seem like great additions that were left out at the last minute. I won’t even begin to discuss the camera potential… ugh.

So the rumors were true, there was a camera until they decided (or Steve decided) there wasn’t enough space…

No plans to sell Zune HD outside the U.S or how the iPod touch won’t tremble

Microsoft has confirmed that it currently has no plans to bring the Zune HD outside of the US.

That’s too bad, you know, I thought the Zune HD was one of the few products that could make the iPod touch look old. Yet, they won’t sell it outside the United States and they won’t win much market share.

Gizmodo has intel, World, iTablet will be released

Ah… The iTablet.

Gizmodo, one of the most famous gadget/gizmo blog in the world has Intel. Read the story.

Despite the rumors, I never fully believed the Apple tablet was real, until I heard these words over my phone: “Hey, it’s [redacted]. I may or may not have sat in some Apple meetings for the tablet.”

I was driving, and swerved a little bit, even though both hands were on the wheel. Someone honked at me.

“What was that?”

They repeated themselves.

I switched on Bluetooth and pulled over to the side of the road to hear the story. You see, earlier in the day I’d given my phone number out to someone who sent me a cryptic email wanting to talk Apple. This must have been them. (Later on I verified to a high level of certainty that they were in the position to have access to the information and after talking to them for over an hour, I believe them to the same level of certainty.)

“The device, which I’ve held mock ups of, is going to have a 10 inch screen, and when I saw it looked just like a giant iPhone, with a black back— although that design could change at any time” they said, “with the same black resin back, and the familiar home button.” That’s obvious.

“But it will come in two editions, one with a webcam and one for educational use.”

Educational use?

They continued to explain the device as something that would sit between an iPod/iPhone and a MacBook, and would cost $700 to $900—”More than twice as much as a netbook,” he said.

To make up for that cost and make the device more than just a big iPod there was, this person claimed, there was talk of making the device act as a secondary screen/touchpad for iMacs and MacBooks, much like a few of the USB screens that have come out in recent months from Chinese companies. Very interesting.

They went on to say that although the project has been going on under various names between four and six years, the first prototype was built around the end of 2008. Adding, “The time to market from first prototype is generally 6-9 months.” That would place the device’s release date in this holiday season. They then said, “There was a question of what OS the device would run, too.” (Other people I’ve talked to have implied this remains a huge secret.)

My call dropped on some windy road off Skyline Drive. Fucking AT&T.

Later, I asked, was there a code name for the project?

“Yes…[redacted].”

I thought about it for a second, googled the term, and it all made sense.

“Don’t publish that name, please,” they requested.

Don’t worry, I won’t.

I believe what Brian says. What [redacted] says, too. The codename? I guess the codename won’t be something like Revolution, Domination or some great word, but something trickier… I don’t know. If it all made sense when he googled it, it means it’s not something you realize when you hear it, on the first time. Ah. I love this kind of riddles.

Sony Ericsson’s rebirth: Android Xperia

xperia-rachael-android-1

TechRadar reports:

Sony Ericsson’s much-rumoured Rachael Xperia X3 Android handset has moved a giant step closer to reality after pictures and specs of the phone were leaked by Expansys.

If Sony Ericsson was going to have a renaissance, it would be with a phone like this, given the super-heavyweight specs.

We’re talking a high-res WVGA four inch touchscreen (eat your heart out TG01), 10mbps HSDPA for blindingly quick internet on the move, and 8.1MP camera with flash.

There’s also a 3.5mm jack, aGPS, Wi-Fi, microSD (High Capacity) expansion AND 3D graphics on board, according to the online retailer.

And that’s before we even get to Android, which it seems Sony Ericsson has skinned to the hilt to match the new version seen on the Satio. Of course, it could just be the Android rumours aren’t true… but that would surely shatter the illusion.

We’re very, very excited about this new super-thin phone, as it would easily jump to the head of the Android pack (should Sony E get all the other, you know, phone bits right).

I’m as excited as they are, and I will continue to report news about this phone.

Whole new design, whole new philosophy

I’m going to take a few holidays, then I’ll explain what the heck happened.

Is Intel about to dive into a new market ?

There is a thing I really can’t understand. Last year, netbooks emerged on Earth. So you know, Netbooks are small-sized computers etc. Now, Intel is about to unveil a deal they made with Nokia. What’s that fuss all about ?

Actually, we care about Intel.

They’re the ones behind this netbook mania. Of course, they launched a netbook called the Classmate but this isn’t that important. What’s important is that they made the chip everybody uses in netbooks, Intel Atom. And now, Intel will announce something this morning in about two hours, PST (8:30 AM).

Bloomberg says Intel is going to announce a deal with Nokia; Intel will deliver new chips for them. It’d mean Intel dived completly into mobile phone’s market.  And it’d also means maybe Nokia is going to launch a new product. I bet it’d looks like a MID. What’s that ? A Mobile Internet Device. A hybrid device, between laptops and mobile phones.

But you know, as always, we should wait for it; it’ll maybe be legendary (yeah, I’m totally into how i met your mother).
