What to think about the new MacBook Air

Since it seems that Apple wasn’t clear enough while unveiling the MacBook air and explaining its purposes, if you feel curious today, here’s a batch of interesting reads to clearly understand its raison d’être.

Gizmodo thinks (and rightfully so) that the new MacBook Air is the death of the MacBook Pro.

No, I’m not trying to attract visitors by saying this (it’s not my headline) but I think that in the future, there will be a clear separation between portable Macs. We will have portable workstations and light notebooks. The 13-inch MacBook Pro will be radically changed and the 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pros will become the aforementioned workstations.

Marco Arment has another vision.

And if you want to know everything about these notebooks, just follow AppleInsider’s exhaustive review.

Motorola Droid Pro: game-changing device?

motodropro.jpeg

Three days ago, Motorola unveiled the Droid Pro. And why is this important?

Finally, Android surpassed Apple in the U.S.

I strongly believe that we can foresee what will happen between the iPhone and Android. Android will definitely surpass the iPhone and the iPhone will become the Mac of smartphones but it will still have its intrinsic shininess—with advantages related to this position.

Now, Motorola takes the first step in the right, new direction, attack RIM. And apparently, they did well.

Next year for Palm: greatly improved Pre

It seems that the next Palm device, when it will be released, will play in the same league than his dear Android and iPhone friends.

Firefox Mobile goes live—Android wins

Another good reason to go for Android.

Is your Mac slow? Try these simple solutions

Great write-up from TNW. It details various things you should try when you feel your Mac is slow. However, the article is concluded with an interesting psychological analysis. In fact, there aren’t much things you can do about your Mac’s speed.

At first, when you buy your Mac, you want it to be amazingly fast so you think it is. And as time goes by, you think your Mac is getting slower but it isn’t—it’s just the fact that since it’s getting older, you think that it will slow things.

I’m afraid I’ll have to disagree. The experience with your Mac isn’t psychic. When you feel it it slow, it unfortunately means that it is slow. Test it, you’ll see. Let’s not fall into psychologic answers for very pragmatic and mechanic questions.

*Spark, a nice info-stream launcher for Android

Sometimes, I wonder why I stick with Apple. And at this precise moment, I remember: wholesome goodness.

I particularly like these kind of applications since they optimize your time. Plus, this one is quite well designer, so it’s a win-win.

BlackBerry tablet, PlayBook unveiled

The news just broke, I do not have much details yet.

The video is above, the official press release is here and a little photo to make you smile is here. People, I love Apple, but please, do not say they copied the design. First they haven’t and second, the form factor limits design possibilities.

Specs seem quite solid, 1 Ghz processor, 1 GB RAM dual cameras and check the press release for more information.

What is the Samsung Galaxy Tab?

Apart from the hardware which of course cannot be really different, it does seem like Samsung enjoyed iOS’ iPad UI.

A lot since this is one of the biggest rip-off I’ve ever witnessed. Plus, they say it’s going to cost a little bit less than a thousand dollars. Yet, it would be grand if Samsung, when they’ll announce officially the price, make an Apple-like move, declaring it would cost a lot less. Though I do not expect this to happen.

iPhone and the blind

Moving story about a man who bought an iPhone and could feel colors and shapes again. This is what a cynical guy would call excellent PR for Apple.

MeeGo’s UI is quite familiar, right?

meegoui.jpgNokia will launch its new smartphone OS quite soon and if the UI they’re going to use remains mysterious, a team member posted on the official website some schematic pictures.

It makes me think of something… What? Maybe something between HTC Sense UI and iOS.

The true rupture is WP7. Not this.

Palm launches WebOS 2.0 SDK with details

Interesting new features. Palm tries hard to differentiate its mobile OS from iOS by highlighting, upgrading unique features.

BlackBerry Torch: a bad launch?

150 000 units sold.

Well, it’s way below iPhone 4 1.7 million, but as Gizmodo recalls, it’s quite a lot for non-iPhone handsets. The problem about this was RIM’s expectation.

I can’t understand why people don’t see this kind of things coming. Were they really expecting it to be the phone ?

With such a crappy display ?

South Korea and technology: a national issue

This morning I read a pretty interesting piece over there at the Economist’s technology blog: Babbage.

It explained how Koreans were, since their childhood, used to buy Samsung products and not products from non-Korean companies.

On July 17th Apple decided to leave South Korea out of the iPhone 4’s second release, explaining that it had faced a delay in receiving government approval. And so the new iPhone, a “next-month phone”, became a “next-next-month phone” (KR). South Koreans are rational consumers. They don’t deny the quality of the Galaxy S, and are well aware of iPhone 4’s reception problems; they are just not thrilled at being pushed into buying Samsung. Patriotic guilt is more likely to drive them to the imperfect iPhone 4 like a teenager with daddy issues; after the next-next-month release, it won’t take long for young South Koreans to leave Samsung at the altar.

Interesting read indeed.
